Work Experience

Work experience is a chance to get hands on with what it means to be a professional at KPMG. Your experience will be your own, but it’s helpful to hear from other young professionals about the insight they’ve gained.

Audit

What’s it like to work in Audit?

The main objective of the Audit department in KPMG is to ensure the financial statements of their clients are a fair reflection of their financial performance. These can be PLCs or limited companies. KPMG also offers Audit support for charities.

Working as a part of Audit as a Placement is greatly rewarding and interesting. My day-to-day role included contacting banks, meetings with clients and testing controls. I worked on large but very different multinational companies nearly every week and found that every company can differ. You’re assigned to a team – for each client job I travelled to the client’s site with members of my team. It’s a big opportunity to gain exposure, not only to accounting, but to the differences in companies across different industries.

You’re given the chance to show your capabilities in many ways and you’re assigned client work to carry out, with a deadline. This made me feel very comfortable, as I was included in all discussions.

Tax

What’s it like to work in Tax?

Working in Tax as a Placement is a great experience as you develop a broad range of skills and knowledge. I was selected to join the Tax Department for my Placement.

The Tax department is split between Advisory and Compliance work, but you get the opportunity to experience both areas. Compliance work is focused around tax returns, which means it’s numbers driven and if numbers are your thing, you’ll really enjoy getting stuck into these. This helped me to develop an understanding of the tax system, different tax rates and the different rules and exemptions relating to the treatment of goods and services.

On the other hand, Advisory is more factual and law based. The goal is to build evidence on the available facts and information of the case and provide the right advice. Advisory is very interesting as you get to work on a variety of clients from aviation, to FMCG companies, to investment funds and restructuring queries. Advisory allows you to build on the knowledge you attained from Compliance, putting it into practice, but in a more specified way. My day-to-day role included working on proposals and client deliverables.

Deal Advisory

What’s working in Deal Advisory like?

As a Work Placement in Restructuring & Forensics within the KPMG Deal Advisory practice, there are opportunities to work on site with clients, but I really enjoyed being based in the KPMG offices as it allowed me to build a strong network and get to know my team well.

Within the teams I was placed in, from graduates to Partners and Directors, I’ve always felt mentored and supported by those around me. Everyone has taken the time to guide me when I needed it.

Over time, I’ve been able to get a really good understanding of the cases I’ve been working on, which spanned a variety of industries and types of engagement, and I’ve always felt my contributions were useful. The environment in my department is dynamic due to the nature and variety of work we conduct across sectors. We encounter challenging and unique situations frequently and we work closely at times with Tax and Legal, which lends itself to a broad experience. Working in Restructuring & Forensics has helped me to be more solution-orientated and confident in my ability when faced with a challenge. I’d really recommend a Deal Advisory position to anyone who thinks they might enjoy this type of work.

Consulting

What’s working in Consulting like?

I was lucky enough to be working on the client’s site for most of my Placement in Risk Consulting on different engagements, which varied in size and duration. This gave me a very broad experience doing different projects where I got great exposure to the banking and finance industry in Ireland.

On all the teams I was part of, I was constantly mentored by those around me, always being taught through experience. Working in Consulting has changed the way I think and work, approaching problems and tasks in a more direct and structured way. Throughout my Placement I had a lot of support from KPMG graduates and some of the more senior members of the teams. I was always being guided in terms of both my professional and personal development.

My input was always meaningful and any tasks were clearly explained so I understood not just my contribution, but its place in the bigger picture – which led to a complete understanding of entire processes, firms and industries. What struck me most was how, from Day 1 of my first engagement, I wasn’t treated as an intern but rather, as a working professional. This was followed up by all the teams I worked with – giving me a comprehensive view of what it’s like to work in KPMG and the professional services industry.
